We’re exploring ways to make the Bisterne Park area a better place to walk, wheel, cycle, play and spend time.

We want to hear from you about how the area works today and how it can be improved for the future.

During the 2024 consultation on bus route improvements, residents expressed concerns about the volume, speed and the impact of traffic through the area.

Earlier this year we carried out Automatic Traffic Counts and Turning Counts to monitor movements at junctions across the area. The data has shown that, on an average day, the busiest roads are Fyfield Road, Forest Rise and Bisterne Avenue. These high traffic levels are worsening existing issues, such as narrow road widths causing difficulty for vehicles to pass safely. It can also increase the risk of vehicle conflict.

As of 2021, 39.5% of households in the area did not have access to a car or van, and a further 45.7% owned one vehicle. This means many residents rely on walking, cycling and public transport for everyday journeys. Improving the safety and accessibility of streets for walking and cycling is therefore particularly important to support local travel and access to services.

Our vision

We would like to understand whether these concerns are shared more widely across the area, and whether residents would like to see further changes to address these issues.

We want to work with the community to understand these issues in more detail and identify solutions that reflect local needs. Potential improvements could include:

Measures to reduce through-traffic, such as modal filters and traffic direction changes
New or different traffic calming measures and changes to road layout to reduce speeding
More trees and planting to make streets greener and increase shade
Green spaces to improve biodiversity
Rain gardens to reduce flooding and improve drainage
Improvements to help people cross the road, including formal crossings and continuous footways
Accessibility improvements

By improving how streets are used, we can help create a neighbourhood where streets are not just for cars, but places where people can safely walk, cycle, meet neighbours, and where children can play.
