Consultation on a proposal to close Edinburgh Primary School

We are consulting on a proposal to close Edinburgh Primary School in Walthamstow
No decision has been made to close the school.
The Council wants to hear the views of pupils, parents and carers, school staff, governors and the wider community before making a decision.
Why is the Council proposing to close the school?
The number of children attending Edinburgh Primary School has fallen significantly in recent years. The school currently has 109 pupils on roll, compared with 521 in 2017/18, leaving it operating well below its capacity.
This reflects a wider decline in demand for primary school places across Waltham Forest and other parts of London. As pupil numbers fall, schools face increasing financial pressures because funding is largely linked to pupil numbers.
The Council needs to respond to these changes while ensuring that children continue to have access to good-quality education and that school buildings and resources are used effectively to meet the needs of local children and families.
What is being proposed?
The proposal is to close Edinburgh Primary School.
If the proposal proceeds, the Council would work with families and neighbouring schools to support affected pupils to secure alternative school places and manage the transition as carefully as possible.
Support would also be provided to staff impacted by the closure of the school.
What would happen to pupils and families?
The Council recognises that a proposed school closure can cause uncertainty and concern for children, families and staff.
If the proposal is taken forward, arrangements would be developed to support affected pupils into alternative schools. The Council would consider individual circumstances, including children with SEND/education, health and care plans (EHCPs), accessibility and travel arrangements, and the support needed by families during the transition.
The Council would also work with the school, neighbouring schools and relevant partners to help minimise disruption to children’s education, wellbeing and progress.
Further information about transition arrangements would be provided as the process develops.
