We want to hear your views about culture and creativity in Waltham Forest.

Waltham Forest Council is consulting those who live, work, study or visit Waltham Forest to help shape a new Cultural Action Plan. This will inform how we support culture and creativity in the borough in 2024-2030, with clear recommendations and an ambitious but achievable action plan.

Background

Waltham Forest is unlike anywhere else in London. It has a unique history of making, innovation and creativity, from the birthplace of the arts and craft movement to its significant contribution to grime, rave and pirate radio culture. Over the last decade, Waltham Forest had one of the highest rates of business growth in London’s creative industries. Culture is celebrated and supported in every community and there is an abundance of local grassroots initiatives delivering exceptional projects across the borough.

In 2019, Waltham Forest became the first ever London Borough of Culture. This was a pivotal moment that attracted audiences of over 500,000, engaged every school in the borough and supported 1000 cultural organisations.

A word on culture: we adopt a broad and inclusive definition of culture as stated in the Mayor of London’s cultural strategy (Culture for All Londoners, 2018) that includes less formal places and spaces. All kinds of cultural venues, places and spaces must be able to thrive in London, from world-class museums, galleries and festivals, to the pub on the corner or the skatepark down the road.’ We recognise and value that culture means different things to different people.
