Area 3: High Street public realm improvements
We want your feedback on the proposed changes to Walthamstow High Street!
We plan to create a safer, greener, and more inclusive high street for everyone, and we need your help to achieve that. Local areas thrive when shaped by the communities, businesses and traders who know them best, so your feedback is essential to design a high street that everyone can enjoy.
Following the latest round of engagement on Walthamstow High Street through events, drop-in sessions and surveys, we have developed concept designs for four key zones of improvements throughout the high street. We are now back out talking to businesses and traders to get their feedback on the designs.
If you are a market trader or business owner on Walthamstow High Street, we want to hear from you. To get involved, please complete the survey below.
Our plans
We plan to create a safer, greener, and more inclusive high street for everyone, and we need your help to achieve that.
Our plans for the high street will build on feedback we’ve already received from the community and focus on four key areas of improvement:
- Providing much needed planting and greening along the high street to create cleaner and more sustainable spaces.
- Increasing safety and accessibility by improving lighting, creating areas for people to stop and rest, and make sure the high street is an inclusive place for everyone.
- Maximising space for businesses, market traders, events, and play, and increasing visitors and footfall by making it easier to walk and cycle to the high street.
- Improving signage and artwork to celebrate the area’s unique heritage and culture, including the famous Walthamstow Market.
We have identified four areas where these improvements could be made along the high street. The design proposals can be viewed here.
Our focus areas for the high street have been identified from previous community feedback, which suggested street furniture like seating, more green spaces, and enhancing personal safety are top priorities for the high street.
Improvements for Walthamstow High Street will build upon design guidance shaped by feedback from previous engagement, including the Walthamstow High Street Strategy and Delivery Plan set out in 2018 and findings from recent consultation on improvements for Rosebank Villas and The Scene.
Traders and businesses
Based on previous engagement with market traders and visitors, we know that vibrancy and ‘messiness’ are celebrated aspects of the market, so it is important that changes are in keeping with the distinct character of the area.
We know that changes to the high street can have a big impact on market traders, so we will be engaging with you throughout the design process to minimise disruption. It is important to note that the stall layout will remain unchanged.
Operational requirements, including access, parking and pitch location for traders remain central to the designs. In developing the designs, we have ensured minimum impact to the traders and their pitches.
A key aim of the high street regeneration works is to drive more footfall and trade to the market, and we need your feedback about how we can achieve this.
Engagement
Local areas thrive when shaped by the communities who know them best, so your feedback is essential to design a high street that everyone can enjoy.
Traders and business are key to a thriving high street, and we want to continue working with you to ensure you remain at the forefront of shaping improvements for Walthamstow High Street.
Over the next few weeks, we will be capturing feedback with you on the high street, and you can also access our online survey to have your say below.
The survey will be open from 10 December 2024 to 10 January 2025.
