Engagement from the Culture for All: St James Improvement project and St James and High Street Business Forum highlighted that businesses and residents in St James wanted to see more footfall, market stalls and activations in the St James end of High Street and surrounding areas. To respond to this, we have designated an Economic Impact Zone (EIZ) in the St James area (see map below).
The EIZ is a set of business friendly actions to help stimulate economic growth in the area. This includes:
Signage: better signage and improved connections to the High Street.
Pavement Licences: Businesses in the designated area EIZ will be eligible to apply for a Pavement Licence instead of paying more expensive Pitch Fees for table and chairs, to support the animation of this stretch of the High Street. Businesses can apply for a pavement licence here.(External link)
Market: development of a new weekly market for the St James area of the high street.
Public artwork: installation of new co-designed public artwork,
Events and activations: Council facilitation and promotion support for events and activations such as busking in the zone.
Enforcement: Collective enforcement actions on landlords breaching planning or licensing conditions.
By creating the EIZ, we hope to develop a destination area in St James to help benefit local business and attract more investment and more regular local traders to this area of Walthamstow.
