What Is Coproduction?
Coproduction is a way that we can work together.
More specifically, it is the way of us working together where you have the power to choose our actions and focus.
It's about placing decision-making in your hands. Only by doing this can we be sure that our services reflect your needs as residents of Waltham Forest.
In coproduction, we (the staff) need to help you to lead the way by giving you the tools and information you need. We must help you to feel fully supported.
Our residents' group, Waltham Forest Engage, came up with this definition of coproduction:
“Co-production acknowledges that peoples’ knowledge and lived experiences of social care services (and their families’ and carers’) are recognised as invaluable insight. It means that people are equitably involved in influencing, planning, designing, and choosing support and services, from the very beginning.”
Our Participation Ladder
Achieving true coproduction takes time and commitment.
Our participation ladder helps us understand the different levels of your involvement. Getting to true coproduction, at the top of the ladder, is our long-term goal.
Other forms of participation, like codesign, have their own time and place. We aim to involve you as much as possible in shaping our services, and this will look different depending on factors like the task and the amount of time we've spent working together. However, coproduction is always what we need to be working towards.

More Information
A big part of our work in the Voice and Influence Team is to make sure Waltham Forest Council staff have a strong understanding of coproduction and how to work toward it. We do presentations and have created a Coproduction Toolkit, which you can see attached on this webpage.
If you would like to learn more about coproduction, we have also included a link to the Social Care Institute for Excellence. This is a very helpful and more in-depth guide to coproduction, and it includes a video.
