Transforming Langthorne Park
Your park is changing
Between late February and early summer 2026, improvement works will be carried out at Langthorne Park. This marks the first phase of a wider suite of improvements we are looking to deliver over the course of the coming years, subject to future funding. These projects have been shaped by your views and input gathered through engagement events, workshops, and Area Framework consultations. Designed by Jonathan Cook Landscape Architects (JCLA), the works aim to make the park safer, more welcoming, and better connected to nature and community life.
The works will focus on three key areas:
- The Birch Grove entrance
- The wooded area by the MUGA
- The Pavilion building
- as well as park-wide art and interpretation

- Compact car park layout to make more space for pedestrians and cyclists
- New cycle parking
- Festive lighting
- Fresh planting and a new rain garden
- New park signage
- Dedicated storage for park maintenance teams
- Removal of outdated railings and structures
A new outdoor learning area, in the wooded area next to the basketball courts which will be managed by The Hive.
Upgraded park facilities and Pavilion building
- A new café hatch for refreshments during events in the park
- Installing a defibrillator
- A new community noticeboard
- Repairs to the amphitheatre and surrounding paving
A suite of public art and interpretation projects across the park in collaboration with local community, groups and organisations - see below on how you can get involved!
These improvements are funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (Central Government), developer contributions (CIL and Neighbourhood CIL), and SANGS contributions for improving access to nature and greenspaces.

What to expect during the works?
The park and Pavilion will remain accessible from Birch Grove for pedestrians and cyclists throughout the works.
The car park will be closed for the duration of the works.
We'd like to remind residents that these car parking spaces are reserved for on-site staff only. You can find the nearest parking options on the Council’s website.
Be part of the story
Throughout 2024, hundreds of local voices joined the conversation to help shape these exciting improvements. From school children to long-time residents, your ideas have been the driving force behind the ideas and potential proposals.
Over the next six months, Blackhorse Workshop CIC (link) will work closely with Wood Street Walls, the Worth Unlimited Youth Club and other local stakeholders to create new artwork, as well as games and signage and a new community flag to be raised at the Langthorne Festival. These will celebrate the park’s identity and the community around it, and build on the park’s history as a place for public art. Through this project we will create 10 short apprenticeships for young people from the borough to learn new creative skills and gain employment experience.
If you are interested in getting involved in the project, either by participating in public making workshops or in opportunities for young people, you can get in touch with Blackhorse Workshop CIC on email info@blackhorseworkshop.co.uk
Background
Langthorne Park is an important and well-loved neighbourhood park at the heart of South Leytonstone.
During the South Leytonstone Area Framework engagement events and the Langthorne Park Festival you told us you want to see the park flourish, make it safer, celebrate its natural spaces, and offer more community activities.
We have taken your suggestions on board and commissioned Jonathan Cook Landscape Architects (JCLA) to help us develop an exciting vision built around five big ideas that came directly from you:
Making the park work better – removing the clutter and simplifying the park so everyone can enjoy the space more easily
Creating a safer environment - tackling antisocial behaviour and adapt how some of the park areas are laid out ensuring everyone in the park feels safe and secure
Celebrating nature - protecting and showcasing the natural beauty in the park, from its large pond to its impressive trees
Building community - opening up new ways for visitors to get involved with the park through activities and volunteering opportunities
The vision and early concept ideas for improving the park can be viewed in the Design Report, which you can download from the documents list on the righthand side of this page.
The Design Report provides a technical overview of opportunities for improving Langthorne Park and sets out guiding principles for potential future interventions within the park, subject to the availability of funding. The purpose of this report is to inform and guide the detailed development and design of individual projects the Council might be able to deliver in the coming years, subject to funding being secured.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated in our school workshops at Jenny Hammond Primary School and Worth Unlimited Youth Club, and everyone who came down to talk to us during the Coffee & Tea afternoons with Avenue Road Estate residents, drop-in sessions in the park, and all who shared their thoughts through our online survey in September and October 2024.
