As part of High Street Phase 2, a series of public space improvements will be made at the junction of Palmerston Road and Walthamstow High Street which will introduce greenery, Walthamstow Market signage and granite paving to make this busy space more accessible and improve the appearance of this important crossroads.
These improvements form part of the ‘Walthamstow: Culture for All’ programme which is funded by UK Government using the Local Regeneration Fund.

What’s changing?
Through 2024 we carried out a series of engagement events with residents, businesses and market traders to develop plans to improve this area of the High Street. Our plans for Palmerston junction have used this feedback to define the following improvements:
Improved safety and accessibility – a reworked layout for Walthamstow Market and improved paving and new Walthamstow Market signs.
Increasing green space – new trees and drought resistant planting to create healthier, greener spaces which improve biodiversity.
Improved appearance - new high-quality materials including granite paving and Corten steel planters.
New street furniture – including seating and improved cycle parking.
Supporting local business – making it easier and more enjoyable for residents and visitors to visit the High Street and Market.

What to expect?
Works will start on site in Autumn 2026 and are expected to complete in Spring 2027.
All businesses will remain open as usual with site works phased to minimise disruption.
During the works pedestrian access to the High Street and surrounding businesses will be retained at all times.
Vehicle access will be retained where possible with some periods where vehicles will be diverted to allow works to take place safely on site.
There will be some temporary and permanent changes to market stall locations in this area during the improvement works to allow work to be carried out safely and create a safer and greener space for pedestrians.
